PA Medical Home Initiative for Parents

Hi Everyone!

I’m excited to announce that our community has grown to over 100 members!

This network is a “Web 2.0” application, which means that it is designed to get better as more people use it. We want you to participate!

Because of this, I just wanted to encourage everyone to do a few things that will improve the user experience for you and for others in the community:

1. Completely fill out your profile.

Why: One of the best reasons to belong to a social network is that information is power. The more connections you have, the more information you are likely to get. If someone starts an autism interest group, where there will be lots of talk about community resources and the upcoming Autism Insurance Act, you want people to be able to find you and send you an invitation, right? Others can find out about you by searching in the “Members” area, but only if you have the relevant keyword listed in your profile.

How: The right hand column has a mini-menu which includes a link called “Settings”. Click on “Settings” to open your “My Settings” page. On the right hand side of the “My Settings” page, you’ll see an option that says “Profile”. When “Profile” is selected, you’ll see options for changing the information in your profile. Don’t forget to save the changes by clicking the red “Save” button at the bottom of the page.

2. Set the controls on your profile.

Why: Your user experience will be improved if you can set up everything the way you want it. This website gives you lots of control over what emails you receive, whether or not comments can be posted on your profile, who can contact you, and so much more! Why not customize your experience as much as possible?

How: On the right hand side of the “My Settings” page, there are menu selections for “Privacy” and “Email.” The “Privacy” and “Email” pages are self-explanatory (just select the options you want), but don’t forget to save the changes. I recommend leaving most of the email options checked. You can always change the settings at a later time if you’re getting too much email.

3. Add a picture to your profile.

Why: The picture doesn’t necessarily have to be of you. It could be a picture of a flower, a butterfly, or a race car- something that is representative of you. This will let other community members identify your posts easily. You will no longer be an anonymous smiley face.

How: On the right hand side of the “My Settings” page, you’ll see an option that says “Profile”. When “Profile” is selected, you’ll see text boxes that let you edit the information in your profile. Go to “Profile Photo” and click on the picture frame icon. A dialogue box will open. Select “Upload an image from your computer,” then browse to the desired image. Once you find the image you want, select it and click “Open”. Click the red “Done” button. Congratulations on your cool new picture!

4. Consider if you are happy with your user name.

Why: You may find that you feel more comfortable posting comments if you have some anonymity. If you have set up your account using your full name, you can still change your UserName to something else.

How: Once again, go to you’re “My Settings” page and make sure that “Profile” is selected. Change the name listed in the box marked “UserName or Alias.” Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click the red “Save” button.

5. Post something.

Why: You're an expert! Also, there are two new forums in which everyone will have something to share: "What I learned today" and "Inspiration, Hope, & Resilience".

How: Click on the "Forum" tab. You'll see a list of all the forums that currently exist. Click on the forum in which you want to add a message. Click "Start a discussion". Write your title and content. Then hit the red "Add Discussion" button at the bottom of your page.

I hope all of these suggestions help you look at this website in a new way. Sincere wishes for a happy holiday season!

-Debbie (Your enthusiastic network administrator)

I am excited to hear from other parents of adult children who are dealing w/total care in home care needs of their child.
Christopher is now (28) years old .......how quickly the years have gone.
He was born w/ Hyrocephlius, needing a shunt for life.

We live in Reading, Pa.
Christopher became eligable finally for our local Waver program a few years ago.

As his Mother I am very active in being my son's advocate, not afraid to speak out even knwn to become demanding when I know what is in his best interest.

Never say never......is so very important as a parent especially when others paid to do their jobs " think" they can say no to a request of service or programming !!

Thank you & keep up the great job !!
