PA Medical Home Initiative for Parents

As an employee at the PA Medical Home Initiative, I have the opportunity to hear from lots of parents of children with special health care needs. I recently received an email from one mom who talked about how wonderful volunteering has been for her son:

"As a parent who has a son who has autism & non-verbal I think it is so important to spread the word in a forum like this across all disability groups about programs, social events, businesses etc.. that open it's area to everyone with a disability. Not many families know of opportunities at local animal rescues that their child/adult or entire family can get involved in.

If you are starting to go down that path and offer information to your members... I would like to suggest a local rabbit rescue here in Broomall, PA (Delaware County) called Luv-n-bunns. Their website is www.luv-n-bunns.com which will give you all the information you need to know.

My son has been volunteering at this rescue every Saturday for the past year and I can't begin to tell you what a difference it has made in his life. Last year this rescue was invited by ASA Philly to the Autism Awareness Day at the Philadelphia Zoo. They were so touched with my son's involvement with animal-rescue and felt it was worth sharing with others in the community."

This leads me to wonder if anyone else has had their child participate in volunteer work? Where did you volunteer and what were the benefits?
